Solo Baritone – Michael Cavanagh
Born in 1994, Michael Cavanagh is from Stockport and began playing the Baritone at the age of 8. By the age of 15 he had gained his Grade 8 with Distinction and was Principal Baritone of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain – a seat he still holds for the 5th consecutive year. Whilst at the NYBBGB, Michael performed as part of the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall live on BBC Radio 3, and has also been a recipient of the coveted Maude Wright award, the Harold and Bernard Tovey award for excellence, the Harry Mortimer Soloist award and the Katie Ogden soloist prize.
In 2011, he reached the final of the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist Award and in 2012 gained his Dip.ABRSM with Distinction. In September 2013 Michael began his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music where he is taught by David Thornton, and won the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble prize as part of the A4 Brass Quartet whilst still in his first year of study at the RNCM. In May 2014, Michael got through to the Semi Final stage of the European Brass Band Championships Solo Competition held in Perth, Scotland. Michael joined Grimethorpe Colliery Band on Solo Baritone in January 2014.
